Looking at Pictures 2014, sculpture/installation at Kilometre of Sculpture, Rakvere, Estonia
I wanted to make a link between visual art and the performing arts. The performing arts in Estonia enjoys wide popularity and respect. No one questions its validity. BUT there seems to be gulf between the public and visual art. My chairs represented an imaginary audience – an audience that was so keen they even brought their own chairs. The chairs look at the other work in the exhibition and therefore in a sense put art on the stage. Appreciation of art begins by looking…so why not sit down to do it? Maybe the visual arts should make more use of chairs…maybe galleries and museums should have more seats, more comfortable sofas. |
